Tasted at The Sampler’s Batailley vertical tasting, the 1960 Batailley has a light cedar and cigar box bouquet that is still fresh but not exactly vigorous. There is something redolent of an old Burgundy here, musty and decayed, a little gray rot imparting some vegetal aromas, though not overpowering. The palate is light and innocuous, with touches of wild strawberry on the entry, the acidity not too sharp—simple but harmonious. I suspect this was heavily chaptalized at the time, but at 50 years of age, it is admittedly better than I expected, even if it is drying out on the sharp finish. Tasted January 2011.
