The limited, 100-case cuvee of 2002 Malleolus de Valderramiro is fashioned from an 81-year old vineyard. Rich, concentrated, and oaky, it reveals abundant quantities of smoky blackberry and cassis fruit, complex earthy, forest floor, and tobacco notes, and a heady finish. Like a Ferrari with a teenager behind the wheel, this red shows extraordinary power and class, but youth undermines its focus and control. Its ripe black fruit flavors are enriched by mocha-scented oak and coat the palate, supported by muscular yet well-integrated tannins.
