This is a wonderful vintage for the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and even if this wasn't the greatest era for this particular vineyard, the 1980 Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru remains a beautiful wine, offering up aromas of sweet red fruit, orange rind, wilted rose petals, vine smoke and exotic spices, followed by a medium-bodied, supple and satiny palate that's bright and fine-boned, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. It isn't as textural or layered as Richebourg, Grands-Echézeaux or La Tache in this vintage, but it's a wonderful bottle.
