The most interesting news is the stunning white Hermitage being produced by Jaboulet. The 1991 Hermitage-Chevalier de Sterimberg, a 45% Roussanne, 55% Marsanne blend, was not put through malolactic fermentation, as was the 1990. It did, however, spend two months in new oak casks. Rich, deep, and full-bodied, without the power and authority of the 1990, it possesses excellent richness, a honeyed nose and texture, and deep, long, luscious flavors. These wines can last for decades, so I would not be surprised to see this offering hold up for twenty or more years. It is time that consumers start taking a closer look at the white wines from Jaboulet. For years they were acceptable as opposed to thrilling, but that has changed.
