The flagship 2006 John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon was the only Wynn wine I was able to taste. Having visited the winery in 2008, it is apparent that serious strides have been made under winemaker Sue Hodder. As for this wine, it spent 22 months in 100% new French oak. It is opaque purple-colored with an alluring perfume of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box, violets, black currant, and a hint of mint. This is followed by an elegantly styled wine with a smooth texture, layers of savory red and black fruits, superior depth and grip, nicely concealed, ripe tannins, and a lengthy, pure finish. Very dark and pretty chewy and hard work. For the moment this is too angular for me but it will presumably soften.
