The luxury-priced 1999 Dalmau Reserva (2,000 cases produced) made primarily from Tempranillo, was aged 24 months in new French oak where it also experienced malolactic fermentation. It exhibits copious quantities of spicy new oak along with hints of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, vanilla, and cedar in its medium to full-bodied, concentrated personality. This old-vines blend of mostly Tempranillo, Graciano and Cabernet Sauvignon is full of berry and cherry fruit. It comes on a lighter frame than some, with more raspberry and cherry on the palate than jam. For a new-age wine, it’s textbook in that it isn’t overdone.
