The 2008 Montefalco Rosso is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot. Sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, spices and tobacco float from the glass. Not surprisingly, the Sangiovese plays a central role in the wine’s aromatic and flavor profile, lending a measure of lightness and grace that isn’t always found in the Colpetrone wines. Juicy and expressive, yet not at all heavy, the Rosso is a wine that impresses for its grace and exceptional balance. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.
Colpetrone can be counted on for rich, powerful wines. Sagrantino has plenty of opulence on its own, so I often prefer the straight Sagrantino bottling over the Gold, which is at times over-extracted and generally overdone on all levels. The estate remains a bit of a work in progress.
