Aged, complex, and subtle is the 1985 Gran Reserve 890. A compelling nose of smoke, earth, plums, tobacco, cherries, and vanillin emerges from this light garnet-colored 1985 that also reveals considerable amber at the edge. It offers complex, savory flavors of spice, faded flowers, and red fruits. There is suppleness yet vivacity to this medium-weight wine that is all finesse and restraint. Although not for everybody, it is a brilliant example of this style of Rioja. Look for the 1985 to continue to drink well for 7-8 years.
