The 2008 Sagrantino 25 Anni is made in a style that showcases focus and length above all else. Dark cherries, tar, licorice, camphor and game are some of the notes that flow from the glass. The flavor profile bears some resemblance to Syrah, but the tannins are pure Sagrantino. This is a gorgeous wine from Caprai, but it will require a few years in bottle. The 2008 doesn’t have the sheer size and volume of the 2007, so my hope is it will become approachable at an earlier age. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023.
Marco Caprai remains one of the leaders in Montefalco. This year, Caprai has a new wine, a single-vineyard 2007 Sagrantino that emerges from a parcel next to a pond that gives these vines a unique micro-climate.
