I adored the 1990 Saffredi (so much so that I purchased some), and the 1991 Saffredi is not far off the mark. Reminiscent of a Bordeaux Pauillac, it reveals an opaque dark ruby color, as well as a wonderfully sweet nose of vanillin, cassis, and weedy tobacco. Dense, rich, and full-bodied, with surprising glycerin and fat, this is a beautifully made wine from what has turned out to be an underrated vintage for Tuscany. Drink it over the next 7-10 years.
I have been impressed with the wines of this Tuscan estate. A Leonardo Lo Cascio Selection, Winebow, Hohokus, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620
