The 2005 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Le Tense is 100% Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) that was aged in a combination of French oak barrels and larger casks. This is a fairly bold, forward wine from Valtellina, particularly in its dense, dark fruit. Spices, earthiness and herbs also make an appearance, adding further complexity. The wine offers excellent persistence on the palate, although the tannins could use a little more polish. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011.
