Capanna's 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is a rich, concentrated effort loaded with plenty of dark red fruit, smoke, tar, licorice and underbrush. It shows superb depth and purity in a style that reconciles the ripeness of the vintage while maintaining notable elegance and complexity. A further year or two of bottle age should help round out the tannins, although the wine is drinking beautifully today. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018. Refined and austere, this mature Bunello offers dusty aromas of old spice, granite stone and dried currants. The wine offers good dimension and depth in the mouth with solid tannins that are neither grainy nor raw.
