The expressive nose of the 1997 Puligny-Montrachet La Rue Aux Vaches offers spicy earth and mineral scents. This is a medium-bodied, silky-textured, and plump wine filled with well-ripened pears, anise, and honeysuckle. It is ideal for drinking in the near term, say over the next 3-4 years. I adored the aromatics of Belland's 1997 Corton-Charlemagne. They reveal super-ripe fruits awash in butterscotch (did I also detect a trace of volatile acidity?). Its thick flavor profile is densely layered with buttery spiced apples yet reveals a dryness in its otherwise impressive finish that is worrisome If this chalkiness was caused by the wine's recent bottling it may dissipate with a few more weeks of aging. In that event, this Corton-Charlemagne may ultimately merit an outstanding rating. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2005. Represented by Russell Herman, Berkeley Heights, NJ; tel (908) 771-9082.
