Tasted at the Chateau Canon vertical, the 1929 Canon has a legendary reputation. It has a chestnut core with light tawny rim, clear in color, which is always a good sign. The bouquet is commensurate with its age. It's rustic. It's old bones. It's not terribly complex. It's seen better times. But bloody hell, you keep on sticking your nose into that glass and find fleeting traces of juniper and sage, singed leather. The palate remains fresh in the mouth. It is not the most complex Chateau Canon or 1929 Bordeaux that I have tasted, yet despite this, you cannot help be impressed by its sheer volume and smoothness in the mouth. There is something spherical about this Saint Emilion, one that must have been immense in its youth. A privilege and a pleasure. Tasted October 2015.
