There is only 100 cases worth of Charlopin's 2006 Gevrey Chambertin Les Evocelles, a Pinot that for all of the enticing sweetness to its cherry fruit, seems to directly evoke the chalky rocks of that high-elevation Brochon site. Medicinal bitter herb and iodine as well as cyanic cherry pit notes offer yet further counterpoint to the wine's sense of sweetness. This finishes with a lift and freshness typical of many of the best wines of its vintage and a fine reflection on the vintner as well as the site. I would expect it to remain delightful for 6-8 years.
Philippe Charlopin is known for his outgoing personality, which applies also to the wines of his domaine spread over more than two dozen appellations, an astonishing nine of which are grand crus. Elevage is long here, and when I last tasted his 2006s with Charlopin in Spring 2008, none had yet been bottled.
