The 2011 Bolgheri Superiore Baia Al Vento hits the palate like a ton of bricks. The blend is 90% Merlot with tiny parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in French tonneaux for 18 months. Espresso, tar, kirsch, dark cherry syrup and licorice make a large aromatic footprint. The bouquet bursts open with extreme intensity, and is almost too much of a good thing. In the mouth, this Tuscan red feels dense, velvety and enduring.
