Originating in Les Ormes and Chalandins - along the route nationale toward Morey - the Charlopin 2006 Vosne-Romanee smells smoky and sweet in a way that reminds me of machine oil and Latakia tobacco, along with scents of dark cherry preserves and star anise. This is remarkably viscous and creamy in texture for its vintage, and the spices from new wood dovetail appropriately with its inherent smokiness and sweetness of fruit. The finish is sustained and sweet, revealing a bit of the tannin that evidently lies otherwise well-hidden, if abundant. This should be worth following for at least half a dozen years. Philippe Charlopin is known for his outgoing personality, which applies also to the wines of his domaine spread over more than two dozen appellations, an astonishing nine of which are grand crus. Elevage is long here, and when I last tasted his 2006s with Charlopin in Spring 2008, none had yet been bottled.Various importers, including The Country Vintner, Ashland, VA 23005; tel.
