Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain comes wafting out of the glass with fragrant scents of kirsch, rose hip tea, underbrush and bay leaves over a core of redcurrant jelly, warm cassis, menthol and baker's chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a great core of expressive, still quite youthful black and red fruit, framed by firm, grainy tannins and loads of freshness, finishing with a lingering fragrant earth perfume.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is full of tar, smoke, mineral and incense notes that add nuance to the dark fruit. This is the most structured of the 2009s Cabernets, yet it shows a weightless, translucent quality I find highly appealing. It, too, could use another few years in bottle, although the tannins are so elegant, it could be enjoyed sooner. Mint and freshly cut flowers add brightness on the finish.
