The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino (tasted twice) possesses a dark plum/garnet color with amber already creeping in at the edge. Aromas of soy, stewed vegetables, old saddle leather, red currants, and sour cherries are apparent in the moderately intense nose. In the mouth, high tannin kicks in, giving the wine a desiccated/attenuated feel. This medium-bodied Brunello boasts more aromatically than in its flavor profile. One to two years of cellaring may be helpful, but this offering needs to be monitored carefully over the next 10-12 years. It is another indication that this Brunello vintage is far more irregular than some of my colleagues have suggested. Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200
