I found sweet red cherries, smoke and violets in the Chassagne-Montrachet Clos St. Jean's nose. It is one of those rare 1996 whites to have red fruit aromas, a characteristic I associate most frequently with the 1995 vintage. This wine has enormous intensity and an awesomely focused, powerful full body. Tons of flint, minerals and sea shells can be found in its broad and oily-textured character. Projected maturity: 2000-2008.
