The purple-colored 2006 5 Fincas Reserva is a blend of 40% Merlot, 20% Garnacha Negra, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Syrah and Samso aged for 17 months in French and American oak barrels. It offers up a slightly reticent nose of spice box, violets, cassis, and assorted black fruits. This leads to a medium-bodied, savory, well-balanced wine with ample spice and black fruit flavors and 1-2 years of aging potential. It can be enjoyed now through 2016.
Castillo Perelada is producing excellent wines from its vineyards in Emporda in the extreme northeast corner of Spain near the French border.
