The 2001 Col Solare (4,000 cases) is being released in August, 2004, prior to the 2000 which still needs bottle age according to Ron Bunnell. Armed with a dark, saturated ruby color and a nose of tarry black fruits intermingled with licorice, this 2001 is expansive and medium to full-bodied. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 6% Syrah, and 2% Malbec that was aged in 85% new oak barrels, it reveals sweet cassis, tarry black fruits, spices, roasted oak, and black currants in its complex flavor profile. This palate staining, powerful wine is tannic, somewhat tight in the finish, and reveals loads of asphalt-like notes in its firm yet lengthy finish. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2017.Tel.
