Pio Cesare's 1990 Barbaresco is built along the same lines as the 1989, only deeper and less evolved, with splendidly extracted, rich, full-bodied fruit flavors crammed into a large-framed, muscular wine. Although just as approachable in its youth as the 1989, it should keep for two decades or more. It is a candidate for the finest Barbaresco Pio Cesare has made.
The 1989 and 1990 Barbarescos are the two finest Barbarescos I have tasted from this traditional producer. These wines offer sumptuous levels of rich, concentrated fruit, and subtle smoky, vanillin scents (evidence of small barrique aging) that harmonize admirably with expansive aromas of black-cherries, herbs, tobacco, and spices. How delighted I am to see Pio Cesare turn out Barbarescos and Barolos of such high quality!
