Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Craipillot has a classy bouquet. Yes, it is introspective at the moment but there is real complexity here: black plum, wild strawberry and cold stone, very focused and harmonious. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, plenty of juicy red berry fruit mixed with a pinch of sea salt towards the finish. It needs another 2-3 years in bottle, but it should evolve into a very fine Gevrey-Chambertin. This surpasses my expectations from barrel, which is great to see. Tasted September 2016.
