The 2006 Torgiano Rosso Riserva Rubesco Vigna Monticchio is 70% Sangiovese and 30% Canaiolo aged one year in oak. It is also by far the estate's best wine. It possesses gorgeous balance in its layers of fleshy fruit, bright acidity and an outstanding finish that wraps around the palate. Now, if only all of the estate's other wines were at this level?Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.
With few exceptions, this is a fairly pedestrian showing from one of Umbria's historic estates. It's hard not to think Lungarotti should be operating at a far higher level across the board.
