The 1992 releases are light, which has more to do with the vintage than any abandonment by Chalone of their rich, full-bodied, oaky style of wine. Both the Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc are good, but they do not possess the body or intensity of the Chalone offerings in 1989, 1990, and 1991.The 1989 Chardonnay Estate exhibits a nice buttery, popcorn aroma, medium to full-bodied fruit flavors, a soft, opulent texture, and a decent finish. It is delicious, but I suspect the Reserve bottlings made available only to stockholders are now receiving the benefit of the highly extracted fruit from the oldest vines. Drink the 1989 Chardonnay-Estate over the next 2-3 years.
