This is a classic example of just how a critic (your's truly) can get it wrong. In its youth, this Zinfandel was so overwhelmingly herbaceous that I detested it. One could see its richness, but the strong, vegetal nose definitely put me in a foul frame of mind. Today, all that herbaceousness has turned into a seductive, almost Pauillac-like, cedary quality. The rich intense fruit the wine possessed when young has not faded away, but, rather, has expanded, resulting in a highly complex, almost Medoc style of Zinfandel, with an intense fragrance of blackcurrants, cedar, and gravel. In the mouth, it is medium to full-bodied, with luscious fruit, and a smooth-as-silk finish. Unfortunately, Kalin, which makes so many ageworthy, handcrafted wines, no longer produces Zinfandel.
