One of the stars of this difficult vintage is the 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Générations Gaston Philippe, which checks in as a blend of 33% Grenache, 33% Syrah and 33% Mourvèdre that spent ten months in new French oak barrels. Big, rich and shockingly concentrated in the vintage, it gives up lots of melted licorice, toasted spice, cured meats and chunky, rich, smoked black fruits. It lacks a touch of elegance, but certainly offers tons of richness and texture, which is a rare bird in this vintage. Drink it anytime over the coming decade.
