Steve Clifton (shall we call him the Italian Stallion?) has produced an excellent 2002 Alisos, a blend of 76% Sangiovese and 24% Merlot. A heck of a buy at $20, it exhibits crisp acidity along with an Italian character of strawberry and cherry fruit intermixed with new saddle leather. Medium ruby-colored with a wonderful perfume, good texture, and a long finish, it should be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years. At present, Palmina is the only reference point for what can be achieved in California with Italian varietals. Hats off to Steve Clifton!Tel. (805) 735-9184
