The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino impresses for its vibrant black fruit, menthol, minerals and spices, all of which come together in a powerful yet weightless style. There is gorgeous richness in the glass, yet the slightly austere style suggests a few years in bottle will be beneficial. This is an especially deep, powerful and authoritative Brunello within the context of the smaller-scaled vintage. I liked this more than the 2004. Not surprisingly, in 2005 Mastrojanni used the fruit from their Schiena d’Asino vineyard for the regular bottling, a decision that has paid off handsomely. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.
