More modern in style, yet also with additional concentration and texture, the outstanding 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Barberini (70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, aged in 40% new barrels and the balance in stainless steel) gives up lots of darker berry fruits, toasted spice, vanilla bean and barrique, with the oak present, but beautifully integrated. It’s not the biggest or richest example of this cuvée, but it has first rate purity, no hard edges and sweet tannin. It will keep for a decade.
