While surprisingly superficial, and much softer and lighter than I recall Durieu’s older vintages, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals hedonistic, precocious black cherry fruit notes intermixed with smoke and earth. There is a noticeable animal side to this soft, round 2001. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. No known American importer.
