The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is an earthier, spicier version of the 2007. Dark ruby to the rim, with notes of roasted herbs, pepper, lavender, and spice, the wine is ripe, rich, medium to full-bodied , and already delicious and complex. Drink it over the next decade.
As noted in my last few reports on Chateauneuf du Pape, Domaine Durieu has emerged as one of the up-and-coming stars of Chateauneuf du Pape, although that is an expression used increasingly in this appellation, where a young generation of men as well as a surprising number of women are exploiting the diverse terroirs and impressive percentage of old vines at a level never before seen.
