A sleeper of the vintage, the reasonably priced 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 80% Grenache and the rest primarily Mourvedre and a small amount of Syrah. The Grenache is aged in concrete vats, and the Syrah and Mourvedre spend time in small barrels. This dense ruby/purple-colored 2007 exhibits a big, sweet nose of white chocolate, black currants, garrigue, pepper, and Asian spices, supple tannins, a deep, full-bodied mouthfeel, and good freshness as well as precision. It is a hefty yet elegant Chateauneuf du Pape that should drink nicely for 10-12+ years.
