The 1998 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Cras has a stoic nose. The fruit is still in situ after 17 years, however, today this wine has decided not to come out and play. Some rigorous swirling reveals attractive aromas of blackberry and bergamot, perhaps a touch of Earl Grey, but I was just seeking more intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly tough tannins at first, but there is sufficient fruit here to keep this wine nicely balanced, even if it maintains a linear, slightly straight-laced finish. Drink over the next 8-10 years. Tasted September 2015.
