Here is a wine that is not supposed to exist! The bottle was opened by Charles van Canneyt, present winemaker at the domaine, the bottle labeled simply "Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru." He explained that at this time they did not bottle the Malconsorts separately...or so he thought. When the cork was pulled on what I shall call the 1980 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts, it was stenciled with the vineyard name. Perhaps a few bottles were made for private use? Anyway, it replicated the ethereal 1980 Romanée-Saint-Vivant that I tasted a couple of years ago. It had a gorgeous menthol-tinged bouquet with hints of kirsch and desiccated orange peel--the essence of what you call "Pinoté." The palate is pure, refined, harmonious and I felt conveyed the backbone you expect from a Malconsorts. It was surprisingly youthful with a soft landing on the sensual finish. In a word--divine. Tasted November 2016.
