When comparing 1989 and 1988, the two so-so vintages for North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon, the 1989s are significantly better. Here is an example of a top notch 1989 that just falls short of being profound. The color is an opaque deep ruby/purple and the nose offers up a classic combination of cassis, spices, herbs, and toasty new oak. In the mouth, there is wonderful intensity, medium to full-bodied richness, soft tannins, fine depth, and excellent length. Approachable now, this wine should easily age for a decade.
