In total decline, and reminiscent of an ancient Pauillac, this medium garnet/amber-colored 1953 exhibited aromas of mushrooms, dried herbs, old saddle leather, cedar, and damp earth. In the mouth, the sweetness and fruit have faded, leaving only a skeletal shadow of what this La Chapelle once was. The finish was all tannin, acidity, and alcohol. Drink it up.
