Crafted entirely from vines located in the Hengst (it is against the law in Alsace to list a grand cru's name on Pinot Noir), the medium to dark ruby-colored 2000 Pinot Noir Vieille Vigne (by using the singular Barmes is indicating that it is an old parcel of vines as opposed to old vines) was harvested at a Lalou Bize-Leroy-like 20 hectoliters per hectare and aged entirely in new oak. Its nose reveals dark berries immersed in copious spices and it exhibits a powerful, thick personality. Possessing the concentration and depth of a Cote de Nuits grand cru, this chewy, dense Pinot is crammed with dark fruit and toasted oak flavors. Projected maturity: 2004-2009.
