This is the estate's second wine, which is a tad less formal than the top-shelf Barrua. The 2015 Montessu represents a hearty blend of 60% Carignano with equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. It ages in oak for up to one year. The wine reveals an inky blackish appearance with spots of ruby brilliance that shine from within. Cabernet-like aromas of dark fruit, spice, grilled herb and black olive are immediate and recognizable. The wine is layered and soft in terms of texture, and it grips the palate with firm intensity.

The 2012 Montessu (an IGT Isola dei Nuraghi wine) is a beautiful blend of 60% Carignano, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 10% Syrah that ages in oak for up to 12 months. It offers depth and personality with pretty fruit renderings that are backed by lighter shadings of spice, cracked peppercorn and pipe tobacco. It would pair next to a hearty winter minestrone with farro and black cabbage.

This wonderful blend of Carignano (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah is one of the island’s emerging “super Sardinian” wines. Plush, rich and extracted, the wine offers the density and longevity to stand up to veal or pork.——M.L.(12/15/2011)—— 90
