The 2008 RESERVA white is a blend of Malvasia (40%), Encruzado (40%) and Cercial (20%) from his Castro’s Quinta de Saes, fermented 50/50 in barrel and stainless steel. Scented with oak notes, this wine’s initially rich fruit pokes through the oak overlay fairly easily. That is because it has steel and acidity underneath, which become apparent only after it warms up and airs out awhile. Solid and delicious, with some velvet on the texture and a little grip on the finish, it handles the oak well and drinks perfectly now. After long aeration and on the second day, it did show some alcohol, despite being a relatively low alcohol wine, as the fruit faded. It will likely be better on the younger side, no matter how long it holds technically. The price point should make it even more attractive. There were 15,000 bottles produced. Drink now-2012.
