Brunel's négociant label 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape features some slightly rubbery notes at the outset, but give this blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre a quick decanting to reveal more cherries and raspberries, plus a bit of leather. It's medium to full-bodied, silky and pretty easy-drinking stuff, with hints of garrigue and some dusty tannins on the finish. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

Brunel's 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape features accents of green peppercorns and leather overlaid on a base of dried cherries. It's medium to full-bodied, with silky but noteworthy tannins that should support it at least through its first decade, but it lacks the sheer generosity and exuberance of the vintage's best offerings, favoring a more sedate, savory approach.
