This is just now being released, unblended Yakima Valley Syrah, with tight, almost impenetrably hard red fruits. It’s a little too volatile, with lifted scents that include touches of nail polish, and the tannins are tough and chewy. This single vineyard, 100% Syrah provides a clear look at why Washington state is poised to become the nation’s leader in producing Rhone-style reds with genuine Rhone character. It’s a barrel selection from the vineyard’s oldest block (not that old, planted in 1997) but along with the usual dark fruit and pepper you find genuine scents of roasted meat and the garrigue herbs and spices that the Rhone can produce. Excellent length and concentration, but the real achievement here is the way winemaker Brian Carter has captured the essential aromas. ——P.G.(5/1/2007)—— 90
