The 2021 Chardonnay, fermented and aged mostly in used barrels, features youthful green apple and pear on the nose, with touches of quince, fresh bread and floral perfume. The light-bodied palate is fresh and easy to drink, with a gently rounded texture, concentrated orchard fruit and a long, nuanced finish.

The 2019 Chardonnay is scented of baker's yeast, roasted almonds and mushrooms with a core of yellow orchard fruits. The palate is light-bodied, bright and fresh with nutty flavors and a baking spice-laced finish.

This winery tends to hold back its production to give the wines more bottle age. While Argyle's two Chardonnays may look old, but both are still tasty and elegant, with good freshness and fruit. I rated them equally, although the 1989 has a lighter color and more up-front fruit. Both wines would benefit from more length and drama, but they are solidly made, competent Chardonnays for drinking over the next several years.
