AusVetia is produced by Kym Tolley, proprietor of Penley Estate, and a Swiss partner, hence the Aus and the Vetia (from Helvetia, an ancient name for Switzerland). The fruit is sourced from several GIs and blended to produce the type of style that the partners have in mind. The 2004 Shiraz was aged in 100% new American oak. It offers a superb bouquet of smoke, mocha, espresso, violets, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a full-bodied, opulent, complex wine with plenty of power, tons of sweet fruit, and well-concealed tannins. A blend of fruit from McLaren Vale, Barossa, and Coonawarra, AusVetia’s inky/ruby/purple-tinged 2002 Shiraz offers peppery scents of blackberries and cassis as well as some blatant new oak. My instincts suggest the latter component will become better integrated with more time in the bottle. This exuberant, blockbuster Shiraz possesses a dense plum/blue/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of graphite, blackberries, cassis, acacia flowers, and pepper.
