The grapes for the 2008 Avanthia Mencia are sourced from 70- and 85-year-old vineyards. The wine is barrel-fermented and then aged for 14 months in new French oak. Purple-colored, it offers up a compelling bouquet of underbrush, smoke, spice box, mulberry, plum, and blueberry that jumps from the glass. This leads to an elegantly styled wine with outstanding depth, succulent flavors, vibrant acidity, and incipient complexity. Give it 2-3 years of additional cellaring and drink it from 2012 to 2023. Bodegas Avanthia is a new collaboration between the Gil family of Jumilla and importer Jorge Ordonez.Importer: Jorge Ordonez, Fine Estates from Spain, Dedham, MA; tel. (781) 462-5767
