The 2008 Syrah was aged in large French oak barrels, 50% new, the rest second use, for 12 months. This is a lovely Syrah from Avantis, bright and solid, showing good structure, intensity and flavor. Some hints of game and a somewhat earthy character emerge with air, while it remains dominated by its crisp acidity early on. Yet, as it evolves, it becomes all about the fruit, although some oaky notes emerge as well. I think this will show well in another year or two. It is a nicely constructed Syrah that is also quite delicious. Early on, this seemed, if anything, better structured that the pricier "Collection" reviewed this issue, but the harder tannins at first attack are mostly a symptom of this being a little younger. It came around beautifully with an hour or so of air. Drink now-2020. Avantis is a family run boutique that makes small production wines. The first wine debuted in 1994.
