The 2019 Sicilia Syrah Lusirà (aged in French oak for 14 months) opens to an inky dark appearance with ripe fruit aromas of sweet cherry, pressed blackberry, sweet tobacco and exotic spice. This full-bodied Sicilian Syrah is generous and thickly layered, giving you intensity and lots of texture. Production is 13,860 bottles.

Baglio del Cristo di Campobello does fine work with the Syrah grape. The 2017 Sicilia Syrah Lusirà is named after the Sicilian word for Syrah, and this wine offers a purely Mediterranean expression of the varietal. There is a lot of ripe fruit, with black cherry and blackberry, and it finishes up with ample leather, tar and spice. The wine shows thick consistency and robust dark fruit with softness and sweetness on the finish. It's a nice pairing with a Mediterranean rack of lamb. Exactly 11,115 bottles were released.

The Syrah grape finds its natural home in a hot climate such as this, on this sun-baked island in the center of the Mediterranean Sea. In the 2015 Sicilia Syrah Lusirà, you'll feel ripeness at the back and lots of sweetness in between. Spicy and thick, there is ample black fruit with exotic seasonings from the 14 months spent in French oak. This hot vintage comes close to going over the line in terms of ripeness and extraction, as the results are slightly heavy and definitely very expansive and wide. I am suggesting a slightly shorter drinking window as a result. There were 11,413 bottles made.

Baglio del Cristo di Campobello is one of many select producers in Sicily who have put their money on the versatile Syrah grape. The variety is very well adopted to areas of Sicily that remain near the coast but that are located in warmer, slightly inland areas. This estate in Campobello di Licata, Agrigento is a perfect example. The 2014 Sicilia Syrah Lusirà shows candied aromas of cherry liqueur, cured tobacco and smoked bacon. This is a robust, ripe and full-bodied red wine with soft tannins and lasting succulence. It ages in barrique for 14 months. Some 11,153 bottles were made.

The 2013 Sicilia Syrah Lusirà opens to a dark color and concentration with loads of bold fruit intensity that rises immediately from the glass. The bouquet presents all that dark, luscious fruit backed by aromas of cured meat, juniper berry and distinct notes of dried tobacco. The results are well amalgamated and they show evident care and precision. Fans of Syrah, from California to Australia, should try this all-Sicilian expression of the grape.
