Here's a very nice, full-bodied wine with big intensity. There is more primary fruit in the Barone Cornacchia 2014 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vigna Le Coste than in other, younger samples from this producer. It is dark and penetrating, with an inky black appearance, offering notes of cherry liqueur and blackberry syrup. Enjoy it with some baked beef ribs. Some 14,000 bottles were released. The Le Coste vineyard is this estate's best-performing site thanks to ideal exposure and soils.

The 2009 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vigna Le Coste offers a nice package of varietal purity. The wine opens to dark concentration and thick aromas that lift lazily from the glass. Dark fruit, black currant, spice, leather and grilled herb find good balance. The wine is lush and rich in the mouth with solid structure and rich texture. Vigna Le Coste is aged in large oak casks for up to 14 months.

Cornacchia's 1993 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vigna le Coste (500 cases available) reveals an opaque black/purple color, and a jammy, intense nose of licorice, cassis, and spice that is reminiscent of a top cuvee of Hermitage. The wine coats the palate with a viscous assemblage of juicy, succulent black fruits, wood, and a creamy texture that borders on being unctuous. This is a huge, superbly made wine with enough acidity for uplift, and enough tannin for structure. For the moment, the wines of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo may be the best bargains of the wine world. (Italy's lira is in even worse shape than America's dollar.)
