The Batzella 2021 Bolgheri Bianco Mezzodì sees Vermentino (70%) paired with the fragrant Viognier grape (30%). One-third of the wine sees barrique and the rest goes into stainless steel. This combination of grapes delivers aromatic freshness with citrus and summer peach. Thanks to the partial oak aging, it also shows mildly creamy textural richness. In fact, you could potentially pair the wine with shellfish and white meats. Some 4,000 bottles were produced, and I think you will find this wine as enjoyable as I did.

The 2019 Bolgheri Bianco Mezzodì is a terrific blend of 70% Vermentino and 30% Viognier. You'll definitely recognize the citrus or lemongrass aromas associated with the Tuscan grape Vermentino, and you might also taste the orchard fruit and acacia honey-like tones that come from the French grape Viognier. A small part is aged briefly in barrique and the rest goes into stainless steel. Together, these happy blending components make for an informal and lively partnership to pair with an anchovy-topped Ni?oise salad. This wine really jumped up in quality and lightness since I last tasted it. Some 7,000 bottles were made.

The 2017 Bolgheri Bianco Mezzodì comes out a bit flat but with some zesty fruit. It offers notes of stone fruit, such as peach and apricot. The blend is mostly Vermentino with some Viognier, and you feel the unctuous heaviness of the hot vintage, particularly in the Viognier.

A blend of 70% Vermentino and 30% Viognier, the 2015 Bolgheri Bianco Mezzodì is a delicately fragrant Tuscan white with spring flower and stone fruit at the top of the bouquet. The green and tonic aromas of the Vermentino have been nicely smoothed out and softened by the thicker presence of the Viognier. Some 25% of the wine is aged in French oak for six months and the rest goes into neutral stainless steel. Drink this wine within the next 18 months.

The 2014 Bolgheri Bianco Mezzodì is a soft and yielding white wine that shows some of the creamy richness of past vintages. The intensity is not delivered in full measure because of the difficult 2014 vintage conditions. Cold and damp weather has taken its toll on the white wines of coastal Tuscany. Yellow fruit, peach and cantaloup melon emerge from the bouquet. This Bolgheri Bianco is made with 70% Vermentino and 30% Viognier. The wine is oak fermented and is later left to age on the lees for six months.
